when i try to imagine an emotionally and psychologically healthy person with a healthy social life, its really hard to imagine them going on a killing spree. that proves nothing but im just saying that im skeptical that guns are to blame for this rather than our culture which is heavy on dysfunction.

we're not very social as a culture, dont have tight knit communities and many kids grow up without fathers. 95%+ of the prison population grew up in a fatherless home. if i heard correctly, the illegitimacy rate is over 50% in the states. im trying to say that i think we have many social ills that probably have more to do with problems like this than guns do.

Are mass shooters motivated by the thought that nobody can stop them?

Most mass shooters fit a consistent pattern: they feel deprived and frustrated by life, because something is alway stopping them from achieving any kind of genuine success in life.

Usually they are stopped by a mental disorder that nobody can control. So nobody can stop the thing that always stops them from succeeding in life.

So a Gun Free Zone attracts them like a magnet. It provides an environment where nobody can stop them, because they are the only one in the room with a gun.

Then they get the added gratification of knowing that they are ruining the lives of other people the way their own life has been ruined.

Finally they achieve the ultimate climax of release by doing the one thing they can do successfully. Finally, they can succeed in ruining the lives of other people just like their own lives are ruined, and nobody can stop them.

And the shooters are the individuals who lack any kind of conscience or morality, so they have no personal inihibitions to stop them from killing, and killing in large numbers.

Is this what really motivates someone to commit a mass killing?

And does this suggest that actually Gun Free Zones motivate mass killings, instead of preventing them?

Yes, our culture is pretty screwed up once you put on your X-ray goggles. It's as embarrassing to be a "virgin" as it is to be a "slut." Sex scenes in movies are more shameful than violent scenes.

I believe part of it has to do with social media though, not just America. The irony is that more technology gives you access to more people, but because of this, this sacrifices actual physical human interaction. Also, people only want to be friends with who they know, feeling awkward and uncomfortable with strangers. We put on our "blinders" in public. I mean think about it - I predict in about a century there will be no more movie-going. People will just watch movies straight from home. Where's the social interaction in that?

I will do you the favor of granting your claim that we have a highly "backwards, unhealthy culture" despite the fact that you have not shown it through any proof.

So if we take your assumption at face value, do you think its a good idea then to allow this "backwards, unhealthy culture" to have easy access to firearms? There's something like 250 MILLION firearms in circulation. Do you honestly think its good to have that much firepower in the hands of your so-called "unhealthy" people?

More directly, yes, it is very VERY important to address the concerns that there isn't enough access to mental health care, and see if there are underlying issues that might cause our culture to be prone to violence. But that doesn't mean we can't take guns away from the crazies in the mean time.

You can address cultural issues if they exist while simultaneously limiting access to guns, especially assault rifles, in the mean time. This is not a "one or the other" proposition.
