Why are so many Americans opposed to social security?
America is supposed to be a predominantly Christian country. One of the basic tenets of Christianity is to love your neighbour, yet so many Americans are completely opposed to helping out the most vulnerable people in society through the medium of social security. How can this dichotomy exist?

Its an inefficient system that is no longer funded by anything but IOU's based on the generosity of ppl lending us money. How can anyone be stupid enough to support that as a retirement strategy?

Let me tell you dumb liberals something, simply because we dont back systems that are run so poorly and inefficiently that they will eventually collapse and totally screw over the ppl they were intended to "help" doesnt mean we are "mean" it means we arent stupid and liars telling ppl that everything will be fine when clearly the math shows this is a bold faced lie. Its like telling a cancer patient everything is fine because you dont want to upset them with the bad news.

That is where you are incorrect. the USA is the most chartitable country in the world at home and abroad.
I am not opposed to helping people at all. social security is failing and its already the single most expensive thing in the budget.
You DO know that social security costs more than the entire department of defense by a large amount right? and even at that its losing money and will be bankrupt eventually.

I'm pretty sure most Americans love social security. The kind of love that gets politicians thrown out if they even think about messing with it.

Love your neighbor and having money forcibly taken from a paycheck you earned are two completely different things.

Love thy neighbor is giving food to your elderly neighbor when they fall on hard times and can't afford it. Giving them some money to hold themselves above water for a little while, etc. Chipping in to pay for their medical care. Volunteering to assist them. You do it because you want to, because you have formed a relationship with that person. And you know that person is "good".
Now, the government comes to your house and decides to take a certain amount of money from you after you worked 9 hours a day, 6 days a week. They divide it up and send it to random people you've never met before: the lady who has 8 kids from 8 different men, the husband and wife crack heads, the 250lb twenty six year old who hasn't left his couch to look for a job in 18 months, etc. The elderly man who spent all of his money, refusing to save any of it--only because he knew that in a few years, he'd be guarenteed a check.

because people have been lied to about the whole program by those who want to get that money into their " private " hands . It's an employer matched savings account with very low operating costs and the profits are used to help those in need instead of multi - million dollar salaries and bonuses . Right now the fund stands about 2.5 trillion dollars and the privateers want to wipe it out .. It is the last remaining bit of capital left after they have wiped out home values with debt . An easy fix for the short term deficit is to remove the income caps .
