Centerlink rent assistance / Victoria, Australia.?
I am 23/work/study and already independent for youth allowance. My parents are considering buying a property. If I rented this property could I still qualify for rent assistance? as they will be renting it out to someone anyway. My question is does it make a difference if parents own the property? or is that not allowed?

If you provided a lease agreement it shouldn't be a problem.

This is a good question and since the last thing you want is to have your benefits rescinded because you are breaking the rules, you will want to contact Centerlink directly with this question.

Only if you go through a real estate agent and don't do it privately.

Hi there
I’m Scott and I work for the Department of Human Services in a team that responds to questions about Centrelink payments and services on social media sites. If you have been determined to be independent, and meet all of the other eligibility requirements, you shouldn’t have any problems receiving Rent Assistance in this scenario, as long as the property is not considered to be the parental home of your parents. You can find more information, including eligibility, on our website at http://www.humanservices.gov.au/rentassistance I’d suggest getting in touch with us to discuss your circumstances. All the best! |
