Pointers on building a website?

I would like to make a good social networking site. Any pointers?

* Avoid using JavaScript pop up windows.
* Do not disable the right-click with JavaScript.
* Fix every error JavaScript may show even if it's known for the users.
* If you use ads, be careful with how you use them.
* Use colors that were wisely chosen.
* Avoid the use of animated gifs.
* Avoid using scrolling marquees and/or blinking text.
* Do not play music without the user knowing.
* Do not create more than one version of your site.
* Make sure your font is readable.
* Use proper grammar and spelling.
* Code the site, do not use software specially designed to do that (like WTYIWYG programs).
