Apple TV will not coonect to the internet?

My girl friend bought me apple TV a while back. I have been trying to set it up on and off since then. when i go to connect to my wifi it says it cannot find any. I cant get apple on the phone becuase they will only talk to me if I buy apple care and I live in a state where there are no apple stores. what network securities is apple tv able to run off of? we have a WPA2- personal security and I thought that would be good enough for the ATV but still wont do anything. thanks for the help
