How to make friends updates visible in chat list on facebook?

When I go online on Facebook, the chat list only shows online friends and those who contact me frequently. But on others profile, I've seen recent updates (apps & other updates) of friends on the upper side of that list. My chat list doesn't show any content like that. So, how can I make those recent updates of friends visible in my chat list?
I've used different browsers but the ticker doesn't appear on my home page.

You must have disabled the new facebook chat by some software, disable the softeare, check your add ons

You can see your friend's updates in the real-time section which is just above the chat list and it comes as default, you don't need to do any setting for it.
