You know that it wasn't the real person despite using his name and it was intentional so that makes it illegal.

It depends on your actions when using the profile. In some places it could be harassment if it was negative. Depending on location, there are laws against slander/libel, harassment, stalking, fraud, impersonation, and identity theft.
It is definitely against facebooks policies and probably against policies of your school or work. Google "cyber bullying" and seriously reconsider impersonating someone else online or anywhere.

yes, it's illegal

many things are illegal, but just because you see others doing it, it doesnt make it legal

Were you using a real person's name? Did you post anything untrue about them, or use that fake profile to harass or bully someone? Then it's illegal -- it could be libel, defamation, invasion of privacy, harassment and a whole host of other charges depending what you posted
However if it was a common name like John Smith and you were not pretending to be any specific John Smith and were not using the account to harass or bully someone then it's not illegal but is against Facebook's user agreement
