How do I eliminate Facebook friends from iPhone contacts?

I have iPhone 5 with current software (iOS 6.0.2). Everything I have read tells me to go to settings, scroll down and click Facebook, scroll down to the option that says "allow these apps to use your account" and move the "contacts" slider to off. I did that, but it doesn't work. My contacts are still full of Facebook friends, some of which I have never even heard of and others that are literally people's pets. Am I missing something, or am I really going to have to manually delete every single one?
