ITunes on new laptop?

I got a new hp laptop with windows 8 for Christmas! I would like to put iTunes on it to update my iPod. My iPod is 4th generation with 4.0 iOS (I have never updated since the 2 years I have had it) and I want to update it to 6.0 iOS. If I put iTunes on my laptop, will it slow my laptop down? How long will the updating process take?
