FACEBOOK CHAT NOTIFICATIONS NOT WORKING?

when i receive a message on facebook i hear the sound but i dont get that red thing that is supposed to pop up when i get a chat message. this makes it very confusing for me when i cant keep track of who is sending me messages. please help i really want to fix it. btw im on a macbook pro

You will have to log off chat in order to get a message sent to your notifications thing as you are describing, otherwise a box will pop up on the bottom right hand corner
