Why do I have to crop my twitter icon?

Why do I have to crop my twitter icon?
When I go to upload my icon/avatar it shows my picture and a slider to zoom in and out and crop it so it will fit. But before twitter just uploaded it without making me crop and when I enlarged it it showed up the same size as when I uploaded it. I have seen others have larger profile pictures than mine so I was wondering how they did it?

You need to resize it so that it is below their maximum allowed dimensions and file size. Your image is probably too big.
