How would i create a brand new website?

I wanted to know how i would consider creating a new website from scratch, rather than using templates such as wordpress etc. I wanted to give it unique functionality, like Facebook which has apps and chat buttons etc. would it still be in HTML or is there another way of implementing this?

for a facebook type site, you would need many scripts (JavaScript, php, Sql) as well as HTML

HTML sets up a site, everything else makes it functional.

have you checked out drupal.org its a free open source CMS. many modules to choose from, im a webmaster and we use it on 54 sites.
