Am I being tricked into attending an MLM (Amway) party?
So I have friends who are a couple, Laura and Kyle. They bought into the Amway thing two years ago, and they're constantly trying to recruit me and my friends into the scam. To my knowledge a lot of people have told them no and now they're tricking people into hearing their sales pitches. I'm afraid that I'm being tricked...

They're throwing a "just because" party next weekend at their apartment. I looked at the guest list on Facebook and it's the most random list I've ever seen... a few people from their church, a few acquaintances, their coworkers, and even the siblings of some of their friends. I noticed that they did not invite some of the most important people in their lives like their family members or best friends. They said they were supplying wine and cupcakes... sounds a bit like a meeting doesn't it?

I strongly suspect that it's a trick to get us to go there and listen to their Amway pitch. Has anyone here had this kind of experience before? What are some of the tell-tale signs that it will be an MLM pitch? Should I go or not go?

So what if it is a sales pitch? If it is, get up and leave. If not, stay and enjoy. You won’t be hypnotized into signing up if you attend. Use your brain and your legs.

Go - if a pitch starts then politely stand up and walk out.

My husband's friend invited us out to dinner with a group of people (he had hired a dining room thing at a nice place) and I was all geared to go, got my mom to have the kids, was very excited to go out etc. Husband came home and said he found out it was an Amway thing. I was so upset and thought about going just for a night out but couldn't bring myself to do it. The lengths they go to....

I would just politely decline and say that you have other plans that night.

This sounds like an old routine that Amway used to run (maybe they still do). They'd invite a person to a "party" and then it would turn out to be a pitch to sell their products. I remember going to an Amway party years ago with my mom. We were told that it was a housewarming party and then they made us sit through all of their BS! Thank goodness my mom didn't fall for any of it! We were too polite to walk out mid-pitch so as soon as it was over we grabbed some finger food and hightailed it out of there!

It's a trap! Don't go!! I have friends (coincidentally named Laura and Kyle, maybe the same couple you know? lol) They host Amway parties disguised as movie nights, beer busts, or even their post-wedding party! (I s**t you not!) Everyone in our circle of friends stopped attending their gatherings because we knew it meant sitting thru Amway pitches and dealing with their annoying Amway friends when we just wanted to enjoy ourselves. Laura and Kyle started reaching out to acquaintances, coworkers, and generally the type of people you described and even then THEY stopped attending the couple's "parties". I'm positive your suspicions will come true... save yourself the trouble and don't go! That's a few hours of your life you'll never get back.
