Is social media becoming the "great internet innovation" many have been waiting for?

Everywhere you look nowadays, you're gonna see facebook or twitter or youtube. And now i'm hearing about businesses making some grand shift towards social media over the next few years. Cloud computing, smartphones and other smart technology, internet IDs, and constant connectivity with the internet and the real world, you name it, but social media seems like the "killer internet app"(no pun intended, just had to include the word 'app') we've all been looking for.

I personally think that social media is not the greatest innovation mankind has ever seen, but it is only another tool that we use to build relationships over vast distances - faster than what we used to. It's like a wormhole where we can interact with people in real-time, no matter where they are in the world. As human relationships evolve, social media does too and there will definitely be tools out there that will cater each person's needs. The question now is " Are you listening? Or just posting useless stuff, adding up to the clutter, like everyone else does? "
