British citizens may visit Canada for a maximum of 180 days without a visa. All you require is a valid passport. Visitors may not attend school, work, or look for work while in Canada, nor can they obtain driver's licenses, social insurance numbers, health insurance, open bank accounts, etc.

However, all visits are at the sole discretion of Canadian Border Services. If they suspect that you won't leave, are attempting to work in Canada, are unable to pay for your stay, etc. they can limit your stay or deny entry. If you state that you are staying more than a couple of months, that will typically trigger questions about you being unemployed, not having strong ties to your home country, how you plan on paying for the trips, where you are staying, etc. They may ask for proof of your employment, return plane tickets, financial statements, proof of travel medical insurance, etc. If they don't like the answers, they can deny or limit entry.

If you wish to attend school, you would need a study permit. This requires that you apply to college, university, trade school, or private high school which accepts foreign students, be accepted, and then apply for a study permit at the Canadian embassy. You will be required to submit financial and medical information and undergo background checks. A typical eight months of study in Canada costs around $30,000+ in tuition, books, fees, and living costs.

If you wish to work in Canada, you need a work permit. This requires that you have a job offer from a Canadian company which has permission to hire foreign workers -- i.e. has applied for a labour market opinion (LMO) report from HRSDC which shows a shortage of workers in Canada in that profession. They must send you a job offer letter and the LMO and you must submit these along with your work permit application to the Canadian embassy.
