A lot of people from Twitter and Facebook got those terms from math. The ">" symbol means greater than also known as positive and the "<" means less than also known as negative. For example, when someone tweets Twitter >>>> that means they like Twitter. When someone tweets Facebook <<<<< that means that they hate it or they don't like it. More people use it on Twitter than Facebook.
