What's the point of a hash tag?

They always use it on twitter. I find it stupid when people post statuses and say hash tag this and that. It gets really stupid when people start saying hash tag this and that after every thing they say at school. What's the point of hash tag?

hash tags on twitter and instagram categorize whatever post/picture that was posted. If hashtagged on facebook, then the person is a complete idiot

Hash tags are used to categorizes ideas or words making it easier for people to search up or to clarify their thoughts and ideas. Almost like pointing out more then one thought and ideas through hash tags.
