It isn't easy, but you can come close with a bit of effort...
1) unfriend everyone
2) remove all pictures and postings
3) choose to delete the account.
You will still get the message that anytime you want to reactivate, just sign back in - just don't. I did this a few years ago, and it seems to work. If you search for me on facebook it either says "not found" or "inactive". (by the way - I never regretted it!)

login to your account..

in your settings, there's an option to deactivate your account.. in that way you'll deleting your facebook account for good
