Why does economic liberalism correlate so often with social conservatism?
In other words, why are the conservative parties so often in favour of free markets (at least superficially), but also highly protectionist about things like "family values"?

And vice versa, of course.

Is this just a Western phenomenon (I'm aware that the Russian communist party is pretty socially conservative) or does it reflect something deeper?

* Each side wants control over what it values. * The right wants control over the mind and body but allows for economic freedom. The left wants control over the economy but allows for freedom of speech and the right to choose, sexual liberation, etc.

because theyre greedy controlling expletives

economic liberalism = freedom for capitalists to exploit the proleteriat

social conservatism = no freedom for proleteriat to mobilise resistance against the exploiting capitalists

its all designed to bolster the power of those in power and render the working majority impotent

These are both highly useful concepts for the new nobility.
Freemarket idealism is used to justify the abuses of the capitalist system.
Family values is a moralistic justification for running a police state.

-------
Tuddy says it better than I do, but you have described the reason why Europeans consider Hitler to have been ultra -liberal while America refers to it as neo-conservatism.

It ends up as fascism in both cases.

And the thumb down fairy stuck again.
