When you accept someone on Facebook does it stop them from following you?

I had some followers on Facebook that sent me friend requests, but after I accepted them my following number decreased by the amount I accepted. So by accepting a friend request does it stop them from being able to follow you?

No Friend request accepted = More friends

Maybe facebook included friends you hadn't accepted yet and when you accepted them they unfriendly you for god only knows what reason.
