It's been months since we broke up and I thought he hated me for breaking up with him.

Well, he might have wanted to keep track of your activities. So he has thought of doing that is best with Facebook so, added You. May be he wants to see if you are in relation with other or not.
Or may be he wants you back [ that happens quite often after break ups ]... Or may be he wants to be your friend. Missed you.
May be he is spying.

These are just few guesses..
There are different possibilities of his intention!!
