If I go on my facebook and turn off chat?

Yes, the way chat works is that it allows people to see when you online so that they can send you a message. If you turn chat off it doesn't send them the information that you are online.

if you off your chat then no one will see you that u are available for chat however there is a tendency that they might know your online in the newsfeed ex: when u like something or comment on certain status/photo... hope this helps

if you turn off your chat then your friends can see you as a offline.. but still in offline status you can chat with your friends if you want..

yes you can do ot.. just choose from the facebook chat
-> option -> sign is as offline..
