Most rules don't apply to a Government that seeks more and more to control the population as opposed to serving them.
A Government that is currently fighting to have armed drones flying over this country isn't going to give 2 hoots about a few privacy laws.

Social media does not invade privacy. People do.

And these people could be the ones you know from your own neighborhood, or seemingly shadowy figures indirectly linked to the government.

Fact is, while we all deem the Internet to be a free and fair place, we still remain connected to systems, mechanisms and laws that can glean information about us through public records and online activities. (Your ISP knows everything you do and all of the stuff you've download over the years.)

Privacy laws are one thing. Knowing about them, understanding their implications and realizing that they can be manipulated for wholly legitimate (yet freedom-curbing) reasons is what makes us aware and capable of doing something to counter them.

You are invading your own privacy if you post your details on social network sites. No personal information of any kind that you don't want "out there" should ever be submitted to these sites that make that info freely available to anyone that asks for it. People don't realise just how far the internet reaches until something bad happens to them, then they blame the social networking sites. If that info wasn't there in the first place it would not be available to anyone.

It's different of course if you do online shopping and banking etc. because those sites are supposed to protect your details, if details are leaked from a hacked or compromised system you have the right to complain and be angry, but to complain about your details being known by people you've never even heard of when you submit those details for the whole world to see is plain stupid.

Don't give anyone the bullets to take pot shots at you. Keep the ammo to yourself.
