Facebook chat glitch - Only showing some people online?

My facebook glitched earlier today and went suddenly from showing roughly 30 people online to only about 5 random people, and I was carrying conversations with some people that ended up set to offline at that time, and they had no idea why it happened. I can't see most of who is online (the activity bar shows people online that aren't on chat) and it's really annoying because I don't know which of my friends are on really. Any causes/solutions?

I don't know if it's a coincidence or not but did anyone else hear in the news that the government is spying on us when we use the telephone or go on the internet? I mean Facebook was working fine. Now this comes up on the news and Facebook keeps disconnecting.
