What do you think is the meaning of this poem, what is it about?
My friend wrote a poem and wants to know if people can tell what her poem is about and the message it is trying to send. She's an amateur poet so not very experienced but can you figure it out?
She runs free on the fields Hand in hand with her classmates Incessant laughter and smiles Mummy today Melissa and I played this new game it was so fun Day after day story after story A little more elongated Changing room gossip And so, he asked me out and a group of girls squeal No roses in her locker Sigh I don't care I'm young Kiss smooch Dance at prom with friends Social media she reads Internet forums she finds It all falls into place Tears on her duvet cover Frequent mask at school Look in disgust Observes those surrounding her I wish she tells herself Screams at God questions Chemicals they soothe Chemicals an addiction My skin it burns Feels better than the pain The pain of its natural state. @High Five Ghost You couldn't be more wrong Hint: Chocolate Actually, it is about a darker skinned girl growing up in an area surrounded by lighter people. As she grows up she starts to realise that in society lighter skin is viewed as better. This hurts her and destroys her self esteem. The 'chemicals' refers to bleaching products so she can make her skin lighter. Bleaching is known to burn the skin but the pain of the skin burning is better than the pain of living with very dark skin. It's about what is going on for young dark girls in society today. You would only think it's 'nonsensical' if you don't understand the poem, which neither of you did. Ads |

It's about a spoiled girl who had a ''perfect'' life, then someone spread rumours about her on the web 'Social media she read, internet forums she finds, it all falls into place, tears on the duvet cover' and she has a loser life and takes pills she don't need for pain.

Ok, so I think it's about a girl young at first, then growing up, finding out that high school is little more than superficial crap that the students themselves don't understand is superficial crap because they physically don't have the ability to know that yet. Anyway, it sounds like a boy was involved, maybe he likes the girl, maybe he doesn't. He asks her out, but the boy succumbs to the negative pressure of his peers not to see the girl and take her to the dance. She then deduces that life must suck because of one inconsequential thing didn't go her way and she turns to drugs and begins to think of herself as a victim, then proceeds to wallow in her own self-proclaimed "pain". Either way, it's pretentious and nonsensical.
