Facebook friends on chat?

Facebook friends on chat?
What does it mean when you have 3 friends at the top of the chat bar on the right and it says "more friends" below? Why does it usually show the 3 same people, or rarely different people? These are people I really do not talk to. One is even an ex bf, whom I know I do not speak to.
