Exert from Wikipedia: Facebook is an online social networking service, whose name stems from the colloquial name for the book given to students at the start of the academic year by some university administrations in the United States to help students get to know each other.[7] It was founded in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.[8] The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. Facebook is a social networking site which allows you to connect with your friends, make new ones, contact them, share photos and videos with them, play games with friends or alone, get the latest celebrity updates and it also allows you to check-in to places so people can know where you are now. I probably thought that everyone in the Internet knows what's facebook.

P.S. others say this can be used by others to track you....this is partly true. You can block other people from viewing you in the settings, but still facebook may produce your details when demanded by others with proof.
