What does # mean on twitter?
i know its a hashtag but what is it used for?

It's called a hash tag .A hash tag is simply a way for people to search for tweets that have a common topic. For example, if you search on #LOST (or #Lost or #lost, because it's not case-sensitive), you'll get a list of tweets related to the TV show. What you won't get are tweets that say "I lost my wallet yesterday" because "lost" isn't preceded by the hash tag.

it's a hashtag basically you put it before 'trending' topics... so for instance say like last night 'betawards' was trending.. i'd say something like "Omg big sean award for best new artist so cool #betawards" it lets everyone know i'm talking about the topic. You can also use it to 'qualify' a topic to trend ... maybe you start your own topic '#yahooanswers' and other people use it too, if enough use it it'll trend.
