Question about chatting girls?

So this girl I know, a freshman always tries to chat me on facebook and all and she repeatedly asks even if I don't answer. When I actually do, she always says one word answers or just smileys. She doesn't do anything to keep the conversation going then she tried to chat me back the next day. I say pretty good conversational starters but it seems like she may be interested. Why does she keep doing this?
