Why does Austria have a higher GDP per Capita than the US?

Possibly because they are a modern industrialized country with a small population?

America is slowly losing its lead of GPD per capita.

Once we get hit over the head with our demise is when the peoples will and determination unite the country to get us back to #1

Never underestimate the American people.

Our problem though, is we act when it becomes a huge emergency.
We just muddle along dividing ourselves further till common sense finally takes over.

Because it has a population less than many American Cities. On any weekday afternoon, over 15 million people inhabit Manhattan alone. The entire population of Austria is only 8.5 million.

It spends next to nothing on National Defense because it relies on everyone else to defend it.

I don't see the point in compairing it to the USA. Apples and Oranges you know. Besides, if not for the USA and its massive military budget, places like Austria would not even exist.
