Facebook makes money off of advertising. Ever notice the ads on the right of the screen? People pay to put those ads up there.

Also, Facebook sells user information to advertisers in order to make money. Now that Facebook owns Instagram, they can now sell your pictures posted there to advertisers. Please read the 2 articles I reference. They explain a lot more than I can in this little space.
