How to add facebook friends that you have no connection to?

I met a guy at work to day and we don't have any friends in common within any distance. So, according to facebook we shouldn't know each other. So I found him on facebook and I'm trying to add him but it will only let me message him. This happened to me before when I met someone from a foreign country and after I sent him a message, I was able to add him. However, me and this new guy have sent multiple messages back and forth and it will still not let us add each other. Help?

This sounds like a technical difficulty on Facebook's part, not yours. Try contacting Facebook asking them to fix the glitch.

it sounds to me like both of your have your privacy settings set so that you have to have mutual friends in order to send a friend request

one of you will have to change that setting, and then the other will be able to send the request
