How do you stop the drivel coming through apart from `un-friending` them?

the best way is to unfriend the people who post the "drivel" or block them. or simply tell them they are full of it and that you do not care

there stays a tick on SHOW IN NEWS FEED. Just click that on their profile settings. Then u will stop seeing such crap.
