It's possible. Employers and others are tuned into just how many people are putting personal information on the Internet and they're taking advantage of it. I myself don't even have Facebook or LinkedIn accounts for this very reason. I have a Twitter account but it's not under my real name. It's always a good idea to carefully monitor what you put online and who you allow to have access to your information on various sites. Don't let just anybody be your "friend" on Facebook, and if you post any personal information on that site make sure you allow only your family and/or friends to see it. Lock down your privacy settings (and be sure you know how they work).

You kind of answered part of it in your description... Yes, you are putting yourself out there for everyone to see. Once you post something, it stays on the servers for good, even after you hit delete post. Pictures? Same thing. Employers are starting to check social networks and use what people post against them while applying, like speaking of drug abuse or stuff. Not only that, there are people working on getting into others account and stealing personal information and credit card information. Some already have.
