first of all they must have activated the option of receiving messages from people they are not friends on facebook (you in this case).

for example i disabled this option because many people i didn't know sent me messages for no reason.

second of all, it has to do with their notifications settings. When i was getting those messages i did not get any notifications, i just saw them on the ''other'' box.
