Social media optimization (SMO) is a sub-function of social media marketing. Unlike the similarly named SEO (search engine optimization), it is not focused on a single end-point. (For SEO this is simply to achieve the highest ranking in search engine results).

The overall goal of SMO is to ensure that a marketing message or brand is "optimized" across a range of social channels. By optimized, I mean ensuring that the relevant research and analyses have been carried out to ensure that available resources have been allocated to where they will most efficiently translate into desired results.

In SMO, a variety of approaches is needed because there are numerous channels and the requirements and goals vary according to the specific product, brand or PR message.

SMO can be part of a broader marketing campaign that includes traditional channels (e.g., print, broadcast, direct mail) or it can be the main component, in the case of a viral campaign for example.

SMO is using SM outlets to boost exposure and promote good metrics to expand sales or interest in your product in either a brick and mortar, or sales online. It includes a presence on Twitter, a FB fan page, Linkedin, ect. You offer promotions or use compelling rhetoric to gain a fan base. You add link to drive traffic to your main website. More to it, but I'm typing from a phone lol.
