if someone appears offline to you but online to someone else on facebook?

what does it mean? this guy sometimes appears offline to me, then online, but for part of the time he's appearing offline to me he appears online to my friend. And when he's showing as online to me he shows as online to her

does he use chat lists or something to toggle who he appears online to or do you think it's a glitch?
this has only been happening about a week

what could it mean? i'm just confused
and it's not like either of us have anything to do with him on facebook, we don't interact with him or message him and neither of us have seen him in a long while

Facebook and many other social websites have glitches that many are un aware of. Or if that person has problems with you then they could have blocked you

You can toggle who you appear online to globally, by friend list or individually. Facebook chat also is extremely glitchy.

He has probably gone on options and pressed appear offline, he could have done it recently or a while ago because he forgot to turn it back to online mode. It could be because he has been busy recently and can only speak to a few people at a time. I hope I have helped.

i have my chat set up so that only 4 of my friends can see when i'm online - lots of people do that

you can click on advanced and select which people you want to allow to see you online - same with every messenger program
