It's a commonly used symbol in the teenage world that means "hashtag"
I think it's used way more on twitter or instagram where I see it much more often.
It's basically a key phrase that helps group the post / tweet with stuff from other people that have the same topic.

Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics in twitter and Instagram. In Facebook it wont work.
