how did you start off on facebook?

a friend made my facebook and added a few people about 3 years ago now... i think ive used it about twice... now i know all about computers, my job is in IT. but i dont really get what to do on facebook... can anyone explain the basics? what is you write up, my friends all say i should start using it and adding people and change it to show my job(still says i work in a job i left about 2 years ago) but i kind of have a bit of a phobia of it... how do you start off? i think i should start using it to keep in touch with friends i dont see as often but at the same time im not a person to show off and shout about my business so dont know whether to do it or not...

i manly use facebook to talk to my friends over inbox and rarely make status's, i use it to share photo's quite abit aswell. But i much prefer using twitter!
