Tweet about popular topics and make it interesting/funny. There is a list on Twitter where it tells you how you can gain followers.

2. Advertise yourself on other social networking sites such as Facebook or Instagram
3. Follow for Follow, Follow people who will follow you back, or ask them to follow you back, There are apps available on the apple app store which will show who does not follow you back and who has un-followed you.
