what was facebook, twitter, and instagram's marketing strategy?

Facebook started out in Mark's University, now you can find people in corners of the world using it. How did the word get out. What did they use to get people to notice Facebook and actually try it? Did they advertise, or use word of mouth?

its not about what you know its about who you know. with facebook it was a university word of mouth thing. with twitter/instagram/snapchat/etc/etc/etc they just piggybacked of off the social networking idea with a small idea with a easy to use interface that works on mobile and pc.

if you want to get noticed make a wikipedia page for your product, also a facebook and twitter and get lots of people to try it. if its good or simple minded it will work
