How do I remove someone as a favourite on Facebook?

I'm still friends with my ex boyfriend on fb but he is being childish at the moment so I want to remove him as a 'close friend' or 'favourite'. Anyway I have unticked the option of having him as a close friend so I no longer get notifications when he updates his status ect. but it still shows his name and photo in the left hand menu and can't get rid of it.
I've looked all through my settings on fb but can't find anything..

I think it is a Facebook glitch. Add him to acquaintance list then i think you wont get such notification
