Nearly every marketing position uses online technologies and marketing practices to educate, obtain and retain customers. However, some roles focus solely on building a company’s online presence through a variety of communication tools such as blogs, social networking web pages and banner advertisements. Online marketing professionals are responsible for developing and implementing their firm’s online marketing initiatives and tracking performance against costs and overall business objectives.

Function
A professional in online marketing coordinates with other departments such as sales, technical support and creative services to plan, execute and manage marketing campaigns. His job is to create marketing plans that incorporate web and mobile technologies and maximize the company’s return on investment. For instance, an online marketing professional creates content for websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, to attract prospects and generate positive feedback from customers about a specific product or service. He also researches and implements keyword best practices for improving search results on websites and highly used search engines. Other duties include maintaining his department’s marketing calendar, monitoring and optimizing online campaigns, testing the usability of internal and external links on websites and generating web analytics reports.

Education
A bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, advertising, English or a similar discipline is required for an online marketing manager position. Courses that help prepare for a position in online marketing include marketing principles, mass communications, business writing, economics, financial accounting, public speaking and organizational management. Professionals looking to enter more director-level positions can obtain a master’s degree in marketing or in business administration (MBA) to increase their competitiveness in the job market.

Skills
Employers look for online marketing professionals with not only excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, but also a broad knowledge of Internet technologies. Online marketing professionals must possess proficiency in managing corporate, internal and social networking websites, and using analytical tools to track web traffic. Some managerial roles require at least five years of online marketing experience, as well as basic knowledge in pay-per-click and banner advertising and search engine optimization. Online marketing managers must also be analytical, detail-oriented and organized.

Salary
The average salary range for an online marketing manager working in the United States fell between $47,256 and $76,410 per year, according to a July 2010 PayScale report. Bonuses averaged between $2,055 and $9,692 per year. Salaries for online marketing are based on skill level, job title, location, employer size and industry.

Potential
Marketer jobs are expected to grow by 12 percent through the year 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor. As the economy expands and more businesses develop new products and services for consumers, companies will hire marketing managers to help them differentiate their brand in the marketplace. Marketing professionals with expertise in up-and-coming media technologies, extensive computer skills and a college education will have the most favorable job prospects.
