I've just started using twitter and i want to know what it means when you put @ and # in front of things?? do you get notifications like you do on facebook? and do famous people usually reply to your tweets to them? thanks.

I'm fairly new to Twitter too. Well i've had it like 2/3 months. No you don't get notifications or anything. On Twitter you can self choose who you follow, say for instance i found you and i clicked follow, if i wanted to send a tweet to you i'd go to the little square thing in the top right and i'd click 'New Tweet' and then to tag you in the tweet i'd put the @ in it and type your user name. Not really sure about that # tbh but i do it too, when you want to put like all in one words like something short and snappy, it's like a trend. One horrendous trend was 'reasons to beat your girlfriend' so you'd put up a new tweet and write '#reasonstobeatyourgirlfriend etc..' i hope that helps, what's your twitter name and i'll follow you to get you started..

I used to have the same problems. But if you use it a lot, you kinda catch on. The @ sign is when you want to tweet something to someone say, a friend, or a celebrity. You would just put the @ sign and then the person's twitter username. "#" is a hash tag. Hash tags are used with a phrase. If enough people use the hash tag and the same phrase it can become a "trending topic" which is a topic thats popular. You can view the list of trending topics when you log in to twitter. You don't necessarily get notifications since you can't really "comment" on stuff. However, you do get e-mails if someone tweets to you (using the @ sign) or if something you tweet becomes re-tweeted (RT) by someone else. Famous people will most likely not reply. Just imagine how many tweets they must get from fans and haters. They can't possibly read and reply to them all. I hoped this helped Smile

When you put a @ in front of something, you do it in front of someone's name. This is how you talk to people. My username is Hockettruns. So if you wanted to talk to me, you'd go: Hey @Hockettruns how are you?

When you put a # in front of something, it makes it a link and puts it in the timeline for that subject. Say, the weather. So you'd go:

Today's #weather is hot and sunny....gonna go soak up some rays!

You don't really get notifications like you do on facebook, but if someone responds to your tweet, they click Reply under the tweet and a window pops up with your name and a @. Then they write their message and click Tweet. You get a tweet on your timeline that they replied to you.
