First of all, you need to understand how television and mass media have replaced the folk tale. The morals we used to get from stories developed and told by people as part of a community, are now developed and told by media outlets with little concern for transmitting morals, and much more concern for ratings and money.

George Gerbner conducted quite a bit of research into this ("supposedly the longest running study of television violence"), and how it is affecting people, especially considering the prevalence of violence on television and film. He came up with a theory of what he called the Mean World Syndrome. Individuals who view a lot of violent media come to perceive the real world around them as a more violent, dangerous place than those who do not consume this type of media. These violent media consumers believe that their own risks of becoming a victim are far greater than they truly are in reality.

People become desensitised to violence and what used to shock people no longer shocks them so violence becomes the excepted way of life. The media will increase levels to shock its audience as required and so violence will increase as people become more and more excepting

As the violence increases so will issues like domestic violence and general violence.Violence is related to family and community dyfunction. Many peoples way of copying with dysfunction is to drink more and take more drugs. This will flow onto all the social issues we see in society causing moral breakdown of our communities.
