My facebook chat shows I'm on when I'm not?!?

Today I figured out that my facebook chat is constantly on even when I'm logged out. (I don't have facebook on mobile, I just use it from my computer.)
I turn off the chat, sign out and close the browser, but it still shows me "on" (I checked it with my friend).
That's so weird, any ideas what I could do about that?

you could have left it logged on from another device that is still turned on, if you checked seconds after this happened then it doesnt matter as facebook takes at least 30 secs to update chat. Also you may have been scammed by frauds that use your account to spread traps to get account info, please change your password if you have any problem with this and log other devices out while youre at it

To be candid, the solution is actually
simple.
Do you know that when these users
appear online on fb chat when they are
actually offline there accounts
automatically post a spam link to their
online friends asking them to click on a
particular link.
Am saying this because its something I
have experienced countless times when I
go online on facebook chat .
Now to fix this problem thereby making
you appear online only when you are
online and offline when you are offline,
you need to disallow some applications
access to your facebook account.
To do this, just visit your account settings
page and locate apps and website, click on
it there you will find the applications you
have granted access to your account.
Delete or deactivate the ones you suspect
or simply disallow the applications you
think are not useful to you and that’s all!

In addition to the first answer supplied here I would like to point out just changing your password may not be enough if your account security has been compromised. I found this out myself when my own Facebook account was compromised. I changed the password and discovered it was still being used.

What I did then was check the email addresses registered to the account and found another one had been added. This meant they could still access my account. I would suggest you check this also. If there is one, remove it and change your password again. If your password for Facebook is the same as for your own email address, change the email password also.

As an additional security measure I changed my settings so that when i log into Facebook from an "unrecognized" device a text message with a code is sent to my phone, and this code must be entered before I can log in. You can set this up so that your home computer is set as a recognized device where logging in from that computer will not require the code.

Do this. This will help you. Login to your account normally. Then goto apps centre tab. You'll find it on the left side of the page. View all the applications you've used which includes mobile apps also. Remove all the mobile apps from there. It'll help you to get outta this problem.
