it depends on your privacy settings and on your new friend's privacy settings. do you have your friends list visible to the public, friends or only me? if you make your list visible only to you probably i think your new friendship wont be shown on your timeline but if your new friend has it (his list) visible to the public, it will appear on his timeline...

Go to timeline > click on "friends" > Click the edit button (pencil) > click edit privacy > click on the drop down arrow infront of friend list > click "only me" click "close"
