what are the benefits for society though social media

We are still discovering what all of the benefits are,or will be,but here are a few I can think of:

Social media,networking sites,are a great place to organize activism.That activism can improve our society.
Information can travel through social media very quickly as people forward it on to their peers. That information can be used to educate,or inform,society.
It also supports the democratization of knowledge and information,and spreads it to people that would normally not be able to get it.
It can be used to further human rights awareness through society.

Interesting question. I would say that the number one benefit is the way that it is able to connect niche groups of people. The huge online audience allows people with similar ideas and backgrounds to come together more easily than ever before. In the past, we were more limited to networking with people near us, and now we have the whole world at our finger-tips.

This allows for things like public activism and the democratization of information, which aren't necessary new but have just be well aided by social media.
