How do i get facebook to stop texting me & emailing me "people I know" that I actually don't..?

When I signed up on facebook they made me give them my phone number. Now every couple of weeks I get a message saying something like "there are 9 people you may know on facebook". I'd prefer not to have these odd recommendations, because if I want to find someone on facebook i'll search them myself.. Also, do I get charged for these texts I'm getting?

Go to "Account settings" and select "Notifications"

There you can turn off the text notifications, mail notifications, etc...!
