why does the current generation of kids have no interest in math or science but obsessed with cell phone, facebook, youtube, myspace, xbox, and twitter? they don't take school seriously at all. So with such trend, what is the future of US as economic, political and military superpower?
this results in incompetent government of future
on math and science scores, US kids don't make it in top 25 countries. Less than 1% of all bachelor degrees awarded annually are in math. now even many universities have lifted GRE and cumulative GPA requirement for graduate school of math.
i have bachelor degree in math and i took a course named " math 473, applied math". Only 6 students in the whole class.
in comparison, English or art history courses would have more than 50 students.

Actually, the current generation has been showing the most interest in math, science and engineering than ever in the past of America.

Anyway, the reason why is because education standards have begun to lower. People don't value education - they keep whining about it's "liberal bias".

oh yeah, because when you were 14 i'm sure school was the first thing on your mind. gimme a break, let kids be kids. the ones that will be leading the country are the ones that cared anyway (yes, there are kids out there that actually do care about their education)

and you don't think the government is incompetent now? i do. i think the us is on the way out as a superpower. we just are. other countries are already way ahead of us technologically

Except it's not a 'trend'. Kids like socializing more than being it school. This is a fact of life: Don't let older adults spin the myth that their generation was full of angels. We could definitely use more math and science degrees, but you are ignoring the fact that this generation is probably the most educated there ever was in terms of high school / college graduation rates.

The technology is available, that's why. If any past generation had access to things like cell phones and Xbox, the interest in such things would be identical to today's youth; this trend shows nothing of incompetence. If anything, the use of new technology at such a young age educates our youth and has actually proven to increase the IQ of "the current generation of kids".

Youth are already becoming more involved in politics at a relatively young age. I really don't think the government is as worse off as you think it is.

The new electronics are fascinating for young people, and something
like the I-Phone and Cell Phone that they can carry around with them
and be in contact with another person at all times, so that's fun.
Math and science are like work and "old hat". I never knew a kid
who liked work over fun.
